    CHAPTER 54

I can’t remember my first day dun sa dati kong work, kung anong suot ko, anong feeling ko when I first walked in the office. Did I feel excited? Did I feel nervous? I can’t remember, but now seeing this whole new building and walking in what looks like this brand new lobby is a bit scary.

Kakaalis lang ni Chuck after nya akong ihatid dito sa bago kong pagt-trabahuhan at ninenerbyos pa rin ako kahit na medyo kumalma ako after ako bigyan ng goodbye kiss ng jowa kong gwapo. I just have to think na this is just a job that I must do, wala dapat masyadong personal feelings dahil work is work and I feel like the more I let myself freak out about it, the more scary it gets.

So I put my game face on and walk to the elevators using my key card, habang nag-aantay magbukas ng elevators, I give everyone I see a small smile and greet those na nag-go-good morning sa akin.

I personally hate when people do this, kasi diba? Pasara na yung pinto hahabol ka pa. Marami pa namang ibang elevator na available, you just need to wait or agahan mo ang dating para hindi ka nagmamadali.

So syempre since I’m pretty irritated already, hindi masyado magandang simula sa first day of work ko ang ganitong experience. I’m also irritated to think that I’ll be sharing this elevator with this person from now on probably because he works in the same building as me. I take a deep breath at pinigilang umirap nang nakahabol na ang lalaking nagpa-hold ng elevator. Bilang huli akong pumasok sa elevator ako ang nasa bungad ng pinto nang pumasok sya, and I suddenly felt my ears go red nung makita ko siya. He’s wearing a white button down shirt na medyo open pa yung collar, he’s wearing black slacks. He’s holding his black necktie while trying to hold the elevator doors open, his hair is mussed up and he looks like he ran a marathon with the sweat beading his forehead pero mukha pa rin syang mabango. And damn it that face, utang na loob ha, that kind of good looks should be criminal. Mukha syang artista with his dimpled cheek and mestizo features. Mukha syang pwedeng gumanap as Jesus sa teatro without the balbas, bigote and long hair. His eyes are hazel brown and ang sarap kalbuhin ng lashes sa haba.

He walks inside with an embarrased grin on his face, looking around the elevator as he says “Sorry, sorry guys.”

I don’t know if he hasn’t noticed me there or he saved his last embarrassed apology especially for me but that’s how it felt like, he looks directly at me and says, “Sorry.”

And if being in the presence of this sobrang gwapo guy isn’t enough, nagulat ako nang maglabasan ang ibang tao from the elevator to give him some more room, I look around me as the gwapo stranger says, “Hey guys. There’s room naman. No need to leave.”

The ones na lumabas ng elevator just said, “No Sir. It’s okay; we’ll get the next one.”

They smiled at him and he just shook his head.

He looks behind him, at me, and says “Tenth?”

Napatingin ako sa papel na hawak ko at tama naman, tenth floor nga so I nod.

He nods slowly and he gives me a warm smile, “Welcome to the building.”

Medyo nahiya ako pero I smile back at him, “Thanks.”

He turns his back facing the door, puts his hands in his pockets. He stands in front of me ready na para bumaba ng elevator. The elevator dings and he steps out of it, then parang may nakalimutan sya as I’m walking out of the elevator rin, he turns back around at muntik na tuloy kaming magkabanggaan. He holds me by the arms and says, “I hope you have a great first day at work.”

Para akong nakuryente sa contact kaya napaatras ako then he lets me go as he says, “Good luck.”

While he’s walking away parang na-tigilan ako at hindi makagalaw sa pwesto ko, until may girl na nag-greet sa akin, “Hi. Are you Andi?”

I look at the girl and say, “Yes. Sorry. I’m Andi.”

I shake her outstretched hand, she smiles at me and says, “I’m Divine, but you can call me Dee.”

I nod at her tapos she says, “C’mon I’ll take you to your desk.”

“This will be your table…” Dee points at the table to the left of the office, then she goes to the other table at the end of the room near the big doors to the executive office, “And this is mine.” Dee seems like a great person, she’s friendly and habang naglalakad kami kanina I see people smiling at her and talking to her so I guess popular sya dito? Di sya bitchy siguro kahit Executive Assistant na. She also is very, very pretty as in fair skinned, slim at wala masyadong make up, she also has black rimmed glasses that frames her perfect face.

Pumunta ako sa table ko at naupo sa sosyal kong upuan, then I look at Dee, “Bago ba itong office? Parang wala pang gumagamit.”

She grins, “Sakto ang dating mo kasi kaka-renovate lang namin. So, you get the perks of using a brand new office.”

She handles the operational side of our boss, Mr. Guevarra and my role is to handle his personal schedule and other needs.

When Dee is done teaching me sa basics ng trabaho ko, Dee’s landline rings she answers it after just one ring, “Yes sir?”

Then she stands up and signals for me to stand too, “Noted sir.”

She hangs up the phone at hawak ako sa braso na itinatayo, “Let’s go.”

I try to fix my hair and straighten my skirt while asking her, “San tayo pupunta?”

She gestures to the big doors and say, “Kay boss, he wants to meet you.”

I stand a little straighter at dali dali kong dinampot ang notebook ko at ballpen, sinusundan ko si Dee when she knocks on the door and she pushes the doors open.

We walk inside the huge office and I see someone sitting behind the big desk, his chair is turned around so I don’t see him yet. Then he says, “Leave her na, Dee. Thanks.”

Parang nagulat si Dee pero she just says, “Alright Boss.”

She leaves me there at since hindi naman sinabing umupo ako I don’t sit down and just stand there like an idiot.

Ilang minutes na nang nakaalis si Dee pero hindi pa rin sya humaharap so I clear my throat and speak, “Good morning Sir, I’m Andrea but you can call me Andi.”

His chair swings from side to side until he turns it all the way around that I can see his face now. My jaw almost drops pero I compose myself.

I take a deep breath and say, “Hello Sir.”

He gives me a shit eating grin and say, “Hello Andi.”

He stands up, walks and stands in front of me and winks, “I like it when you call me Sir.”

At sa bwisit ko hindi ko na napigilan, “What the hell are you doing here?”

Chuck gives me a big smile and says, “I just missed you, baby.”

    CHAPTER 55

I walk out of the office making sure na medyo may gigil yung steps ko, Chuck runs after me and says, “Babe. Wait lang.”

I walk straight to my table at kinuha ko ang bag ko habang umiiling, “Nope. This is not going to happen so just let me leave here with my dignity in tact.”

He laughs pero I don’t stop walking away from the office, hindi ako makatingin kay Dee sa sobrang kahihiyan. If this is his idea of a joke, then it’s not funny.

Just when I was about to walk out of the office, Jesus –look-a-like barges in and gives us all a confused look as he says, “What’s going on here?”

I give him a tight smile, “It’s already ten A.M. and this joke has lasted long enough so I’m leaving.”

I look at Dee and she has a confused look too so tingin ko she’s not in on the joke so I tell her, “Sorry for wasting your time, Dee.”

Paglingon ko ulet kay Jesus-look-alike I roll my eyes, “Excuse lang Sir, I need my dramatic exit.”

He looks sobrang confused and he looks behind me talking to Chuck, “What the hell did you do?”

Nagulat ako sa reaction ni Jesus look alike so I put my hands up to stop him, “Hey, don’t talk to him like that.” I pause at paglingon ko kay Chuck nakangiti siya sa akin, I’m pretty sure na he likes me standing up for him so binawi ko ulet, looking at Jesus-look-alike I say, “Sure he’s an asshole for not telling me he’s now my new boss, making me look like an idiot on my first day diba? Pero only I get to rip him a new one, not you.” I point at his face.

Napaatras ng konti si Jesus-look-alike but instead of being offended he smiles, “You must be Andi.”

I push at his chest, “I am Andi and now I am leaving.”

There was an audible gasp na parang galing sa location ni Dee but I ignore it, I feel a touch on my arm and I look back at Jesus-look-alike, “What?”

Nag-cross sya ng arms sa chest nya tapos he says, “Don’t you think I should have a say in this situation?”

Ginaya ko ang posture nya, “At bakit?”

He grins, “Since I’m the one who hired you, I think I should be the one to dismiss you.”

Para akong binuhusan ng malamig ng tubig, then I look at Chuck who gives me an apologetic shrug, I look at Dee who looks mortified, malamang magka-itsura kami ni Dee.

Then I look at Jesus-look-alike who is apparently my boss.

He’s grinning and I must have a funny look on my face because he starts laughing, then he walks towards Chuck and punches his arm playfully, “You’d do that to your girl? You’re an asshole.”

“Sorry.” Yun lang ang sinabi ni Chuck but I can see the smile on his face. He is so not sorry.

    “Wait. What just happened?”

Yun lang ang nasabi ko then Jesus-look-alike starts talking, “Let me put you out of your misery, Andi. I’m Tristan, and I own this company.”

He nods towards Chuck and says, “Chuck here is my newest IT consultant and more importantly, my best friend.”

Itinaas nya ang kamay nya in surrender, “I had no idea he was coming today, or that he was planning to prank you. I swear I didn’t know.”

Nakanganga pa rin ako at tumingin kay Chuck, biglang naglabas ang galit ko and I yell, “What the…”

Nagulat si Chuck at biglang tinakpan ang bibig ko, “You don’t want to swear in front of your boss now would you?”

My muffled curse words rang through the office pero when I look at Tristan he’s smiling.

    I am mortified.

I bite my lip at hinataw palayo ang kamay ni Chuck, “Hindi pa tayo tapos.”

Tristan whistles and looks at Chuck, “You’re in trouble, bud.”

Nag-shrug lang si Chuck, “She’ll forgive me.”

Binigyan ko siya ng death glare, “You’re going to pay for that.”

That was so unprofessional.”

Tanga mo. Tanga ka. Tanga ka.”

Dee holds my head, “Huy stop it.”

I look at her mejo teary eyed, “Ang gago lang kasi ni Chuck e, mukha akong tanga kanina.”

He should’ve known I take my job seriously and that what he did was a bad idea. Paano ko naman malalamang biro agad diba? Tsaka hello, paano naman ako magre-react kundi ganun.

She just says, “Don’t worry about it. Tayo tayo lang naman kanina, you can still make it up to boss. Mabait naman yun.”

    I cringe.

Alam mo yung clean slate? Yung as in feeling mo walang nakakakilala sa’yo sa isang lugar? You can reinvent yourself, pero parang dito sa nangyayari parang hindi ako maka-start over eh. Parang nandyan pa rin yung past ko kung magkakilala sila ni Chuck, I wonder what they’re talking about now.

Are they talking about me? Na kung paano ako nag-react kanina? Siguro they found it entertaining, I don’t even know my boss yet pero parang feeling ko he already has an idea about me.

And talk about first impressions, hindi masyado maganda ang simula namin kanina, and it’s leaving a sour taste in my mouth. Parang hindi ko yata kaya ng may iniintidi pa akong iba other than my job.

I have to think of other options, ayokong magsimula ng ganito.
